Like most successful serial killers, John Getreu’s success depended on his ability to hide “in plain sight.” He played the part of loving father and husband. This is not a man with a high IQ but he had skills and his skill was charming and manipulating trusting women.

We have interviewed and gained access to all the principal people in his life: wives, children, co-workers, family members and it’s clear that the double life he lived successfully depended on the unimpeachable reputation of the Getreu family name. His father Charles and mother, Erma were all American public servants and this allowed John, who exhibited early signs of deviant behavior, to hide behind their good name. This crime series explores the life and times and previously undisclosed headline-making crimes of the former Stanford employee.

“I had absolutely no idea. NO idea that anyone could do the things he did. He’s a monster and I didn’t tell his parents why I kicked him out because honestly I believe his father would have killed him.”
— Susan Getreu
